During the seven year span at Riverside that launched his career, Bill Evans only twice recorded outside his customary trio format: in the summer of 1962, when he went into the studio in quintet settings involving some of the major jazz artists of the period. The results are combined in this package.

*#1-6 originally issued as Interplay (Riverside 445)
**#7-13 originally issued as part of The Interplay Sessions double-LP (Milestone 47055), as previously unreleased selections. .

The leading figure in the early revolution of modern jazz, Charles Parker, is featured on these performances with two now-legendary trumpet players each of whom was closely associated with him, Miles Davis and Red Rodney. The program of the album consists of some of the best known literature of the bop era as well as a number of standard ballads particularly attractive to these musicians.

First as the brilliant soloist with Miles Davis’s Quintet, then on a series of albums of his own, Coltrane established himself as a symbol of the New Jazz. In this package he is backed by the Red Garland Trio, another of the splinter groups from the Davis Quintet. The Garland Trio had a large following on its own, but with Coltrane as the solo voice, it outdid itself.

*#1-5 originally released as Traneing In (Prestige 7123);
#6-10 as Soultrane (Prestige 7142).

Track Listing:
1. All Night Long, 2. Boo-Lu, 3. Flickers, 4. Li'l Hankie, 5. All Day Long, 6. Slim Jim, 7. Say Listen, 8. A.T.

The closest possible recording studio equivalents of the “all night long” jam session were the several Prestige dates, mainly of the 1950s, at which perhaps a half-dozen good fellows—first-rate musicians and, frequently, close friends—held forth at length in good-natured, stimulating and swinging competition. Among the most interesting were the two closely-linked gatherings (practically nothing but the 1956-57 New Year separated them) that produced these selections.

*#1-4 originally released as All Night Long (Prestige 7073)
**#5-8 originally released as All Day Long (Prestige 7081).

In Your Own Sweet Way Album Version, 8. Conception Album Version, 9. Nature Boy, 10. There's No You, 11. Easy Living, 12. Alone Together.

Any 1950s Miles Davis recording could easily be called a “collector’s item,” but these selections have special claims to this description. The first four offer Charlie Parker in his only recordings in support of Miles, who had begun his disc career as Bird’s sideman. The last four feature a unique Davis/Mingus encounter. In between is Miles just before launching his first great Quintet, heading two groups loaded with top talent of the “post-bop” period. .

*#1-7 originally released as Collector's Items (Prestige 7044); #8 as part of Conception (Prestige 7013);
#9-12 as Blue Moods (Debut 120).

I'll Never Be Free, 24. Don't Ever Say Goodbye, 25. Ain't You A Mess.

Mose Allison had already established himself as a unique jazz voice with his early Prestige albums of Back Country Suite and Local Color (from which this package comes) when the new generation of rock/blues devotees discovered him all over again as Pete Townshend of The Who explains in his notes.

*#1-15 originally released as Back Country Suite (Prestige 7091);
**#16-15 originally released as Local Color (Prestige 7121). .

Track Listing "Jaki Byard Experience":
8. Parisian Thoroughfare, 9. Hazy Eve, 10. Shine On Me, 11. Evidence, 12. Memories Of You, 13. Teach Me Tonight.

Roland Kirk (he did not add the name “Rahsaan” until the very late Sixties, after these recordings were made) could very accurately be described as a blind man capable of playing three reed instruments (some of them quite odd) at once. Nevertheless, he was able to avoid being categorized as strictly a gimmick player—which is a great tribute to his brilliant and multi-faceted improvisatory talents.

The most liquid tenor saxophone tone in jazz belongs incontestably to Stan Getz, for decades regarded as a paramount exponent of his instrument by musicians, critics, and jazz adherents. These tracks represent some of his finest work from the period preceding his introduction of bossa nova to the American household, becoming a celebrity for the non-jazz audience in the process. The music presented here stems from Prestige sessions in 1949-50—shortly after Stan left the reed section of the Woody Herman Herd—and Fantasy recordings with vibist Cal Tjader eight years later when they worked an exciting engagement at San Francisco’s legendary Black Hawk Club.

*#1-2 originally released on The Brothers (Prestige 7022);
#3 & 7 on Conception (Prestige 7013);
~4-6, 8-12 on Stan Getz Greatest Hits (Prestige 7337);
#13-19 as Stan Getz with Cal Tjader (Fantasy 8348).

The quartet has always seemed to be Thelonious’s favorite musical format—it is the context he has worked in most often during his long and distinguished career. And the Five Spot was probably his favorite club—it was there he made his triumphant return to full-scale activity in the late Fifties. The combination of that club and a strong quartet makes this a notable addition to the Monk catalog.

*#1-5 & 11 originally issued on Thelonious In Action (Riverside 262);
#6-10 on Misterioso (Riverside 279).
