1. Dakar 2. Mary's Blues 3. Route 4 4. Velvet Scene 5. Witches Pit 6. Cat Walk

In the spring of 1957, John Coltrane had gone through two years of artistic growth so concentrated it was astonishing even in the jazz world, where compressed musical development is far from unknown. As the other horn in the Miles Davis Quintet, Coltrane had moved from virtual obscurity to acclaim as the tenor saxophone innovator of the decade. Although major stylistic departures were to come, Coltrane was at a peak of the probing lyricism and strength of his middle period. With the interestingly contrasted baritone saxophonists Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams, and a rhythm section of great smoothness and swing, Dakar is a gem in the Coltrane discography. With Cecil Payne, Pepper Adams, Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins, Arthur Taylor.

1. Will You Still Be Mine? 2. I See Your Face Before Me 3. I Didn't 4. A Gal In Calico 5. A Night In Tunisia 6. Green

This was a forerunner of the Miles Davis Quintet as it was his first session with Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones. Up to then his Prestige dates had been of the "all star" variety. (Oscar Pettiford fills that bill here.) By the fall, John Coltrane and Paul Chambers would come aboard to help form the first of a continuum of great Davis working groups. On "A Night in Tunisia" Philly Joe used special sticks with little cymbals riveted to the shaft. With Red Garland, Oscar Pettiford, Philly Joe Jones.

The Modern Jazz Quartet was a major jazz institution, a band that, counting a seven-year “vacation,” lasted 43 years. During a time when jazz musicians were stereotyped as unreliable, rarely sober and erratic, the MJQ played at concert halls while wearing tuxedos. They are not known to have ever been late, missed a gig, or disappointed an audience.

1. C Jam Blues 2. Gone Again 3. Will You Still Be Mine? 4. Willow Weep For Me 5. What Can I Say (After I Say I'm Sorry)? 6. Hey Now

Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist, and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles's group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads, and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove. With Paul Chambers, Arthur Taylor

1. Black Coffee 2. Days Of Wine And Roses 3. When Sunny Gets Blue 4. Greasy 5. Sunrise Sunset 6. Steve's Blues 7. Skylark In 1966 producer Don Schlitten imported Sonny Criss to New York for a recording session with a rhythm section handpicked for their ability to swing and for their understanding of the bebop methods that drove Criss. Determined to enhance the career of an alto saxophonist he considered an overlooked genius of the modern era, Schlitten thus provided the circumstance for one of Criss's great albums. To many listeners, This Is Criss! was a revelation; it presented a fully matured soloist who had overcome the uneven conception and time problems that many of them remembered from his brilliant but erratic earlier work. Highlights include the grit and emotional directness of his playing on the blues and his inventiveness on the beautiful and harmonically demanding "Skylark." With Walter Davis, Paul Chambers, Alan Dawson.

Soul Junction and its companion, All Mornin' Long, found Garland and John Coltrane attuned to one another and in superb form as a result of their intensive work in the Miles Davis Quintet. Trumpeter Donald Byrd's playing was at its peak. Arthur Taylor, a stalwart of time and acute sensitivity, was the drummer. Bassist George Joyner (aka Jamil Nasser) provided the depth and power that later led to his long association with Ahmad Jamal. All hands exult in two of Dizzy Gillespie's compositions, two standards, and one of those Red Garland slow blues that lasts more than a quarter of an hour and is too short.

Andy Bey remains what he was back when this album first took shape—the most recognized, and perhaps the most recognizable, member of the Bey family. A fearsomely gifted singer, he boasts spectacular range all but disguised by the warmth and immediacy of his vocal instrument…Because of his prominence in the trio, Andy and the Bey Sisters often falls into the category of origin bands—the trio that launched Andy Bey’s career…But think of it primarily as a vocal group that, at its best, helped establish the intertwined heights conjoined voices might attain. —Neil Tesser [from new liner notes] .

By 1956, when this album was recorded, Art Farmer had come into his own as a trumpet soloist. His combination of earthiness, drive, respect for melody, harmonic sophistication, and a wistful sound on ballads produced a distinctive and immediately recognizable style. The catchy "Farmer's Market" had resulted in a semi-hit for Annie Ross after she was inspired by Farmer's 1951 version with Wardell Gray. Here, Farmer's remake has one of his best solos of the 1950s. His bassist twin brother Addison is in the rhythm section, along with pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Elvin Jones, new to New York from Detroit. The underrated Hank Mobley is on tenor saxophone

1. Stardust 2. Time After Time 3. Love Thy Neighbor 4. Then I'll Be Tired Of You

It's hard to believe after hearing the eloquence of "Then I'll Be Tired of You" or the title track, but John Coltrane's ballad mastery was the last of his skills to receive wide appreciation. The notion that Coltrane the balladeer was as commanding as Coltrane the uptempo wizard or Coltrane the blues player finally gained acceptance in the early 60s, when this album first appeared and quickly became an important exhibit in the reconsideration. The extended performances boast additional delights, including Paul Chambers's arco bass on "Stardust," Red Garland's well-paced choruses on "Time After Time," some of Wilbur Harden's best trumpet work on "Love Thy Neighbor," and Freddie Hubbard's earliest on "Then I'll Be Tired of You"; they were recorded at Coltrane's final two sessions for Prestige.

1. Surrey With The Fringe On Top 2. Salt Peanuts 3. Something I Dreamed Last Night 4. Diane 5. Well You Needn't 6. When I Fall In Love

Of Miles Davis's many bands, none was more influential and popular than the quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. Davis's muted ballads and medium-tempo standards endeared him to the public. The horns' searing exposition of classics like "Salt Peanuts" and "Well, You Needn't" captivated musicians. The searching, restless improvisations of Coltrane intrigued listeners who had a taste for adventure. The flawless rhythm section became a model for bands everywhere. Steamin' is a significant portion of the music of this remarkable group.
