Having toured the war zones during World War II entertaining the allied troops Andre Kostelantz and his wife Lily Pons returned to the 'States' and recorded a series of Armed Forces Radio Service programs for distribution to the troops abroad. The programs were entitled “Music Millions Love”. It is from these half hour transcriptions that the music on this CD has been selected. It is a companion piece to our previously issued CD DSOY856 which featured vocalist Lily Pons; this time it is the celebrated voice of Ginny Sims who provides the vocals. The last seven tracks are bonus tracks taken from various Armed Forces Radio Shows including The Ginny Simms Show, Mail Call, Treasury Song Parade and Bob Hope's Christmas Party (Command Performance) These rare ‘live’ recordings were amongst the last to be made by Andre Kostelanetz before he took to making studio recordings and conducting symphony orchestras... a collectors' item which will be enjoyed by all lovers of good music.

Perry Como the former barber of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania was thirty three years of age when he made the Supper Club transcriptions on this CD. This being part three, the first and second parts can be had on Sounds Of Yester Year catalogue numbers DSOY824 and DSOY844. These programs made for The Armed Forces Radio Service in 1945/46 highlight Perry’s relaxed way of singing, his friendliness and his sense of humour. He amassed one hundred records in the charts between 1943 and 1954. He even seemed impervious to the arrival of Rock “n” Roll because he kept on recording hits for RCA Victor right up until 1973.

This time it is the inimitable Peggy Lee who is centre stage, accompanied by guests Frankie Laine, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Helen Carroll And The Satisfiers are also on hand as they provided the vocal acccompaniment for the series. Tom Reddy was the vocalist with the Lloyd Shaffer Orchestra, the main featured orchestra in the series of shows, although half way through this CD Dave Barbour’s Orchestra takes over. Dave was Peggy’s husband and together they wrote a number of the songs that can be heard here. Jo Stafford and The Starlighters can be heard on the opening and closing themes on tracks ten and twenty nine. The whole generous and entertaining package is held together by master of ceremomies Martin Block.
Track Listing: Artistry In Rhythm; Reuben’s Blues; Stompin’ At The Savoy; Artemis And Apollo; Young Blood; Stan Kenton Medley: Interlude/ Intermission Riff/ Opus In Pastels/ Eager Beaver/ Collaberation/ The Peanut Vendor; To Duke (Improvisations on “Take The ‘A’ Train); Malguena
This ‘live’ concert played a pivotal part in the late career of the great Stan Kenton. The reaction of the audience who were expecting a more avant-garde performance was to say the least disappointing and latterly caused Stan to create the new 1970’s band with a brand new ‘book’. Nevertheless the music on this disc is interesting due to the unusual line-up of the band, most being European musicians. The fact that they sensed that the audience was not going to give plaudits to who could play the coolest, the soloists reach out as far as they are able, and the rhythm section rocks with an unrestrained swing. “Reuben” never sounded so sprightly, and those featured on “Young Blood” make sure the title lives up to its name.

Chase Hotel. MO. The third program is also for the Armed Forces Radio Service “One Night Stand” program, this time from The Hotel Peabody in Memphis Tennessee on the 7th of November 1958. Flanagan's was one of the top orchestras in the business. In the year from the 15th of March 1950 to 15th of March 1951 his band grossed over $500,000 dollars (in those days a considerable fortune) and the band played to over two million people. During a period of 594 consecutive days the band was booked for 574. Most of the polls of the period including Billboard's annual disc jockey poll voted Ralph Flanagan's Band number one. These recordings were made at the peak of his career. Towards the end of the fifties he gave up the big band and would then perform with small combos of five or six musicians. Jo Stafford must be one of the most loved and prolific American singers of the 1940s and fifties. Originally a member of Tommy Dorsey’s Pied Pipers singing group she graduated to solo artist with numerous hits. During World War II she made a series of V-disc recordings which were shipped to servicemen in all theatres of operations which helped her to become “G.I. Jo”, the soldier’s “girl next door”. The “live” rcordings on this compact disc were made with Lloyd Shafer And His Orchestra, Paul Weston And His Orchestra, Helen Carroll And The Satisfiers, The Starlighters, Martin Block is the Master Of Ceremonies and there are contributions from Woody Herman, SmileyBurnette, The Phil Moore Four and The Mills Brothers at The Supper Club during a period stretching from December 1945 to January 1949 for The Armed Forces Radio service. A suitable addition to any serious collection.
