The Navy Swings was the name of a series of radio programs broadcast in the 1950s with the object of recruiting young men into the U.S, Navy. It featured the top names in Jazz and the top vocalists of the day. This CD features one of the worlds great jazz veterans who in the 1920s made over 4000 records sometimes under different names. His music affiliations are numerous and it would be hard to think of a major jazz musician of that period that he did not at sometime work with. In the 1950s Hollywood produced a bio-pic of the great man with Danny Kay playing the part of Red (with Red dubbing the cornet solos) and featuring many big jazz artists of the day including Louis Armstrong.
Featured with Red on this series of programs is the excellent singer Marion Morgan best remembered for her recordings with the post WWII band of Harry James. Marion is said to have walked out of the James band after accidentally hearing him denigrating vocalists saying that they were ruining the big band business. Even if the comments were perhaps indiscreet it was a fact that was to prove true, as in the fifties, vocalists
emerged from the shadow of the bands to become major stars as solo artists. This was a reversal of the earlier days when singers would be mentioned on records as “with vocal refrain”.
Track Listing: Love Walked In; A Foggy Day; ‘S Wonderful; Fascinatin’ Rhythm; The Man I Love; Someone To watch Over Me; Medley: I Got Rhythm / But Not For Me / Embraceable You; Wintergreen For President; Promenade; Porgy And Bess Medley: Catfish Row / Jazz Bo Brown / Before Dawn / Good Mornin’ Sistuyh / Oh! Lawd I’m On My Way; Bess, Oh! Where’s My Bess?; Strike Up The Band; Tambourin Chinois; Caprice Viennois; The Old Refrain; Stars In My Eyes; Melodie In E, Opus 3, no. 3; Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, opus 18; 18th Variation On A Theme Of Paganini, Opus 43
This CD features the music of three of the greatest musician/composers of the twentieth century, George Gershwin, Fritz Kreisler and Serge Rachmaninov performed by one of the best light music orchestras of the Twentieth century, Andre Kostelanetz And His Orchestra. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Kostelanetz escaped in 1922 after the Russian Revolution. He arrived in the U.S. that year, and in the 1920s, conducted concerts for radio. In the 1930s, he began his own weekly show on CBS, André Kostelanetz Presents. Kostelanetz was known for arranging and recording light classical music pieces for mass audiences, as well as orchestral versions of songs and Broadway Show Tunes. He made numerous recordings over the course of his career he had record sales of over 50 million. Kostelanetz also conducted the New York Philharmonic in popular concerts and recordings. Outside the United States, one of his best known works was an orchestral arrangement of the tune “With a Song in my Heart”, which was the signature tune of a long-running BBC radio program, at first called Forces Favorites, then Family Favorites, and finally Two Way Family Favorites. He commissioned many works from the best composers of his day including Copland, Jerome Kern and Grofe. William Walton dedicated his Capriccio Burlesco to Kostelanetz, who conducted the first performance and made the first recording with the New York Philharmonic.
