Peggy Lee (born Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Carolina, on May 26th, 1920) was of Scandinavian descent, her grandparents being Swedish and Norwegian immigrants. She began singing in her early teens and adopted the name ‘Peggy Lee’ in 1937, at the suggestion of WDAY radio chief Ken Kennedy. After unsuccessfully trying her luck in Los Angeles she found her way to Chicago, where she became a member of a vocal group, The Four Of Us, who had a residency at the Ambassador Hotel. Recommended by pianist and arranger Mel Powell, bandleader/clarinetist/King Of Swing Benny Goodman came to see Peggy and was sufficiently impressed to offer her a place in his band, as a replacement for the outgoing Helen Forrest. Her very first recording with Goodman, ‘Elmer’s Tune’, was an immediate success, and was followed up with further hits like ‘I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good’, ‘Winter Weather’ and ‘Blues In The Night’. She enjoyed her first No.1 record in 1942 with ‘Somebody Else Is Taking My Place’, and recorded a further half-dozen hits with Goodman before setting out on a solo career in 1943. She reunited with Goodman for one last session in 1947, recording a 3-track session which included ‘For Every Man There’s A Woman’, a hit in February 1948. With her light, husky voice, Peggy established herself as one of the most respected, popular Jazz singers in the world and she continued to work more or less until her death, in January 2002.
