A child virtuoso whose piano recitals were local events, Dr. Nina Simone started her musical career as a classically trained pianist, strongly rooted in the study of the works of Bach, and became a singer almost by accident. The rest is history. Her recordings, over the next five decades, earned her cult status, critical acclaim and reached the top of the charts on many occasions.
No single female voice has so bravely assaulted injustice, ranging from racism to adultery, in modern times. A civil rights activist, who in the 1950 was doing, as a woman on her own, what the Black Panthers did ten years later, she was a uniquely versatile performer who recorded jazz soul and pop extensively, whilst being equally comfortable with gospel, folk and show tunes.
Recorded for the Elektra label in 1993, A Single Woman was to be her last studio album. An eclectic collection, the original record included many highlights, including renditions of ‘The More I See You’, ‘Love’s Been Good To Me’ and ‘The Folks Who Live On The Hill’. This new reissue also includes previously unreleased material from these sessions, including a killer take on Prince’s ‘Sign Of The Times’, the blues-infused ‘Do I Move You?’ and Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’.
