Following explosive accounts of the First and Sixth
symphonies, the third release in Valery Gergiev's
astonishing Mahler cycle features Symphony No 7.
The revelatory performances of the Seventh have
been one of the highlights of the cycle in concert to
date.
A fourth release will follow in October 2008
followed by the remainder of the cycle in 2009. Still
to be recorded are Symphony No. 9 during June and
Symphony No. 8 at St Paul's Cathedral in July.Over
the summer Gergiev will conduct the LSO at the
Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms.A major tour of
Japan will follow in the autumn as well as a 14-date
US tour in Spring 2009.
Gergiev's future recording plans on LSO Live include
music by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Bartók and
Stravinsky.
"a performance of the Seventh Symphony
as cohesive and powerful as I can
remember. This was a blinder from start to
finish ... "
****- The Financial Times
"the Seventh so often undercuts its own
material with images of mortality and the
grotesque that it takes a remarkable in
terpreter to hold the thing together and
drive it through to its final ambiguous
shudder. Gergiev did so with bravura; one
senses that he means every note with
desparate conviction"
