Born in Liverpool, on March 14th 1926, Lita Roza established herself as one of the most popular singers of the 50s, initially as the ‘female featured’ vocalist with the Ted Heath Orchestra. Something of a childhood prodigy, she appeared in the chorus line of a local pantomime at the age of 12, following which she attended the Ken Moore School Of Dancing in London. After three years playing pantomimes Lita successfully auditioned for a singing role in Southport, which ultimately led to her joining Harry Roy’s Band in 1942. However, in 1944 she married an American RCAF officer and went to live in Miami. She returned to the UK in 1950, following the dissolution of the marriage, and joined Ted Heath. Lita enjoyed her first major hit record in 1951 with ‘Allentown Jail’ and continued both singing and recording with Heath until the mid-50s, by which time she was established as a huge star.
Her biggest 50s hits included sides like ‘Blacksmith Blues’, ‘Walkin’ To Missouri’, ‘Hey There’ and ‘Jimmy Unknown’. In 1962 she signed with Ember Records, recording a single, a fine revival of Ruth Brown’s ‘Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean’ (b/w ‘(He’s My) Dreamboat’) and an LP, ‘Love Songs For Night People’, the following year. Both were well-reviewed at the time of their release and are much sought-after artefacts by Lita’s fans. Neither have previously appeared on CD, and a couple of studio outtakes have also been included, to complete a unique, collectable package
· Disc 1 comprises her unfeasibly-rare 1963 Ember LP, ‘Love Songs For Night People’, plus a non-album single and two previously unreleased outtakes (*)
· Disc 2 presents the best of Lita’s 50s Decca singles
· The Ember material, on Disc 1, is previously unavailable on CD
· Inlay features detailed liner notes, including exclusive interview material, plus rare pics & memorabilia, courtesy of Miss Lita Roza
