Lee Wiley was one of the most respected jazz singers of the 20th century; born in 1908 she died in 1975 after a career that seemed to never reach its pinnacle.
In 1939 she virtually invented the concept of the ‘songbook’ album, releasing a set of four 78s of Gershwin songs. She followed this with more collections of the songs of writers whose work came to be known as the ‘Great American Songbook’. Her erratic recording and performing career never diminished her stature amongst musicians and collectors.
These 1971 recordings were the last she ever made accompanied by several jazz greats including Buddy Morrow, Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizarelli and George Duvivier.
