With the tremendous proliferation of jazz education in the past 50 years, we’re
used to seeing talented and precocious youngsters in the music. But education
alone doesn’t account for a rare talent like Grace Kelly. She’s accomplished far
beyond her years, as an alto saxophonist, songwriter, arranger, jazz composer
Yes, she is young. Yes, she has great chops, but when you hear Grace Kelly's
tone, you will agree that a fine innovator is poised on the horizon of jazz today
The Kelly-Konitz collaboration on ‘GRACEfulLEE’ came about almost by accident.
“I originally wanted him to record a couple of tracks for another album,” Grace
offers. “It was his idea to set up a session in New York." The result is a collection
of standards and originals that expand the horizon of musical communication and
The album received a 4½ Stars review in Downbeat Magazine and was selected
by the magazine as one of the Best CDs of the Decade in January 2010.
“Grace had invited me to play a few tunes on her new CD but once we got into the studio there were many inspired moments and it turned out to be a whole Cd on its own. I gave her permission to play better than I, if she just couldn’t stand it anymore. With this great rhythm section it was a pleasure to be a part of the musical process and experience. Grace is a fearless young improviser, and besides that she is fun to be around. Now I have a friend in Grace who at this very young age is ‘seriously’ interested in playing the saxophone and more. I thank Irene and Bob (her folks) for being so encouraging and supportive of this project and of Grace.”
“Kelly is still so young that it’s hard to avoid describing her in terms of a phenomenon. Paired with Konitz, she at least is able to share that pressure on the other end of the calendar. To the paired questions, “Has she really got it?” and “Has he still got it?,” the answer turns out to be, “Yes.”.
