Between 1943 and 1948, Ellington made regular visits to Carnegie Hall. This concert in December 1943, presented here on two CDs, was the follow-up to the first in the series, where he had debuted the marvellous tone poem “Black Brown and Beige”, and two pieces from that work are included in this concert. The orchestra on this occasion included luminaries like Johnny Hodges (featured in a great solo on “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”), Ray Nance (who solos in “Take The ‘A’ Train”), Joe Nanton (with a masterpiece solo on and extended “Black And Tan Fantasy”) and Al Hibbler, who takes the vocal duties. This concert is significant as it saw the introduction of Ellington’s next important longer work, the suite “New World’s A-Coming”, with some great moments of his stride piano. Also included is the obligatory hits medley, alongside a selection of both new and proven material. Ellington fans will appreciate the opportunity of hearing an entire concert by the great ensemble from a period in the middle of a recording ban imposed by the musician’s union, giving it something of a rarity value. Recorded by Ellington himself for his own purposes, this is an excellent quality recording and is a must for Ellington enthusiasts.
