Grusin's jazz background inevitably led him to towards bringing out the unmistakable jazz and Latin flavours in some of the original compositions and performances, and developing them with the big band sound and virtuoso musicians. The result is music of coruscating brilliance and extraordinary passion.
"Dave Grusin Presents West Side Story" commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original Broadway stage production of the musical and is also Dave Grusin's tribute to the mastery of Leonard Bernstein as a composer.
The creative approach revolves around imaginative and exciting big band arrangements, primarily done by Grusin, but assisted by other specialist arrangers, with vocal performances featured on the classic romantic ballads. He assembled a group of hand-picked musicians and singers able to do justice to his vision of how Bernstein's music could be adventurously scored to create an ultimately exhilarating and uplifting experience.
It's a hugely significant album in many ways, but more than anything else, it stands as a great piece of musical entertainment.
Features outstanding contributions from many talented artists – Lee Ritenour, Gloria Estefan, John Secada as well as production supervision by Phil Ramone.
