Inspired by Anita O’Day, Chris Connor - along with June Christy, Helen O'Connell, and Julie London - epitomised cool jazz singing in the 1950s. Born on 8th November 1927, Connor left her home town of Kansas City for New York 20 years later. After a stint with Claude Thornhill she joined Stan Kenton with whom she had the hit “All About Ronnie”.
With her distinctive style and expression, Connor’s popularity is as strong as ever. Connor remains, as critic Larry Kart proclaimed in the Chicago Tribune, “a dominating vocal presence whose music is full of hard-earned wisdom and truth.” Acclaimed author Will Friedwald in his book Jazz Singing said:
‘Think of a warm, assured voice that values dynamics so much that it only uses them sparingly……and meaningfully with an unbeatable sense of time.’
This album is a re-issue of Connor’s 1957 Bethlehem release, Chris (aka The Rich Sounds Of Chris Connor), for whom she was the first jazz-oriented act signed to the roster. This compilation was re-released on Ember Records in 1962.
All tracks were recorded between December 1953 and April 1955 at Bethlehem’s New York studio, accompanied by the Ellis Larkins Trio. Arranged by the renowned Sy Oliver, the album contains celebrated versions of “All About Ronnie” and Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life"; and Cole Porter standards such as “Ev’rything I Love” and “From This Moment On”.
