Brew Moore never enjoyed the same degree of commercial success as Stan Getz, Zoot Sims or Allen Eager, but when the spirit moved him, he could outgun all-comers. In doing so, not only did this maverick earn the respect of his contemporaries, but also praise from some unexpected sources.
Beat Generation guru Jack Kerouac was a big fan who lionized the tenor man in great detail in his novel 'Desolation Angels.' But then everyone who encountered Brew Moore was impressed. One musician first encountered Brew when he found him laying flat out on the floor of a New York rehearsal studio.
Brew's head was propped up againt a wall, his tenor sax laying beside him so he could play it without having to hold it up! A nearly-empty half-gallon of wine was in the crook of his arm and a lighted cigarette stuck in the corner of his mouth. As Brew blew his sax sparks flew from the end of his cigarette.
Prepare to be impressed.
