Emerging from a dark depression, Beethoven chose art
rather than death, thus embracing a notion of destiny
and heroism which links him to heroes of the past -
and of his present. The Eroica Symphony, dedicated
initially to Napoleon, and ultimately 'to the memory of
a great man', was to prompt contemporary
commentators to seek out interpretations in the Iliad.
It was this work which first inspired the concept of a
'symphonic poem': here, it is the metaphor that serves
the music and not the contrary.
A Cambridge Classicist by training,Andrew Manze studied the violin with Simon Standage and Marie
Leonhardt. As a player, he specialises in repertoire from 1610 to 1830; as a conductor, he is much in demand
among both period- and modern-instrument orchestras. He was Music Director of the Academy of Ancient
Music from 1996 to 2003, and then succeeded Trevor Pinnock as Artistic Director of The English Concert.
Together, they have toured widely and performed a broad variety of repertoire, which is reflected by their
prize-winning discography: Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik,Vivaldi concertos, Biber's Missa Christi resurgentis,
symphonies by C.P.E. Bach and, most recently, a Handel recital featuring Mark Padmore, As steals the morn.
In 2006 Andrew Manze was appointed Principal Conductor of the
Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Sweden. He is also artist-inresidence
at the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, a Fellow of the Royal
Academy of Music and a visiting professor at the Royal College of
Music, London.
Andrew Manze records exclusively for harmonia mundi usa.
Founded in 1912, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is one
of Scandinavia's leading orchestras, renowned for its performances of
music from the Classical and Romantic periods, as well as
interpretations of contemporary music. The HSO works on a regular
basis with internationally celebrated conductors and soloists who
appreciate the 59-member orchestra's professionalism, enthusiasm,
and combination of technical precision with musical zeal. The modern
and unconventional approach to musical leadership of Andrew Manze,
HSO's Principal Conductor fits perfectly with the orchestra's
character and way of working.
...this is a fascinating programme, and superbly realised...Manze's disc shouldn't be missed.
