Henry ‘Red’ Allen / Wilbur De Paris / Wild Bill Davidson / Eddie Condon / Dixieland All-Stars: Dixieland Jazz - Four Classic Albums Plus (Happy Jazz / New Orleans Jazz / Bixieland/ Dixiecats) (2CD)

Four classic Dixieland Jazz albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
Happy Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Bixieland and Dixiecats plus seven out of eight tracks from George Wettling’s Jazz Band Happy Jazz from 1955 featuring the Red Allen All Stars is the 10" version as opposed to the 12" released under the name of clarinettist Tony Parenti. New Orleans Jazz by Wilbur De Paris and his Rampart Street Ramblers recorded in 1952 is one of the first LP’s to be recorded in Stereo using the now obsolete Binaural system. To conclude CD1 we feature seven out of eight trackd from George Wettling’s Jazz Band. Thus LP came about after a suggestion that an article on Wettling for Collier’s Magazine include photographs of a recording session. A recording session was duly arranged with famed producer George Avakian and the rest as they say is history! CD2 kicks off with Bixieland featuring Eddie Condon and his All Stars was made to pay homage to and catch the spirit of legendary cornettist Bix Beiderbecke. In the words of Condon himself, without wishing to brag, he felt these records came off better than the original Bixes. The reason being the superior musicianship Condon was able to employ including such legends as Bobby Hackett, Wild Bill Davison and George Wettling. Dixiecats featuring the Dixieland All Stars showcases the Dixieland style that took its origins from the New Orleans idiom. Dixieland music had for a while been considered a white man’s music imitating the black New Orleans style. Here we have a predominantly black band featuring such legends as Henry Allen, Willie The Lion Smith, and drummer Zutty Singleton who had been born in New Orleans in 1898 and played with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton!

Gerry Mulligan: All Star Groups - Three Classic Albums Plus (Mulligan Meets Monk / Gerry Mulligan Meets Stan Getz / The Gerry Mulligan-Paul Desmond Quartet) (2CD)

Three classic Gerry Mulligan albums recorded in 1957, including original LP liner notes plus extra material live from the Newport Festival on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
Mulligan Meets Monk there is only one way to describe this classic LP and that is to borrow the words from the original liner notes written by legendary producer Orrin Keepknews. This is one of those once in a lifetime meetings of giants... a rare meeting of major facets and major figures of jazz. It is... intriguing and provocative... in all probability a significant document, a piece of jazz history... but surely there has never been a more enjoyable historic occasion than... when Mulligan met Monk. We at AVID will certainly drink to that! Gerry Mulligan Meets Stan Getz... Another meeting of giants and again we must hand over to yet another legendary producer Norman Granz who was best placed to describe the meeting! Obviously each is a master of his instrument... Stan picked the rhythm section with Gerry’s approval... as an added fillip Mulligan suggested that they trade horns... so on side one Getz plays baritone and Mulligan tenor and on side two each plays his primary instrument. We present here the Mono version of the LP as we feel it presents a more natural and intimate sound quality. Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond Quartet... Well we’re on a roll so lets hand over to another legend Nat Hentoff to describe our next meeting of giants! The idea for this multi linear playground has been bottled... in Paul Desmond’s mind since 1954 when Gerry Milligan sat in with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall... results convinced both Desmond and Mulligan that their ways of speaking music had what Gerry terms a natural affinity. Nat continues... Both... are quite pleased with this session... Desmond’s explanation of his enjoyment in working with Mulligan is succinctly clear... He just does all the right things. Take a listen and we think you will agree! Extra bonus material includes Gerry Mulligan recorded live at Newport with the his own Quartet featuring Bob Brookmeyer, the Marian McPartland Trio, the Teddy Wilson Trio and Duke Ellington & his Orchestra.
